When the 2018 Pro Football Hall of Fame class was announced Saturday, there was one noticeable absence.

Terrell Owens was not among the new Hall of Famers standing on the stage at the University of Minnesota’s Northrop Memorial Auditorium.

The former NFL wide receiver was in Minneapolis this week, but left before Saturday’s announcement because he had committed to play in a basketball game in Los Angeles.

Dawkins was a teammate of Owens on the 2004 Eagles team that reached the Super Bowl. Owens had been critical of the Hall of Fame voting process, but Dawkins hopes Owens can let go of the grudge.

“I’m happy for him, I really am,” Dawkins told reporters Saturday, via Yahoo. “I hope he can take this and just enjoy it, and I guess call off the dogs a little bit.”

McDaniels was elevated to be Belichick’s quarterbacks coach in 2004, getting the chance to work directly with Brady while only a year older than him. By 2006, he was the team’s offensive coordinator for the first time before getting his first head-coaching shot with the Broncos.

That was also the time Belichick hired Patricia, fresh off being a graduate assistant at Syracuse, to be an offensive assistant. Two years later, Patricia flipped to defense to coach the Patriots’ linebackers, and eight years later, he was promoted to defensive coordinator, right when McDaniels returned as offensive coordinator.

The prestigious award honors NFL players who have shown not just excellence on the field, but have been leaders in volunteer and charity work.

Watt, who has missed most of the past two seasons to injuries, is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the Texans. He has long been active in charitable causes and stepped up big in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, which devastated Houston. He began a fund-raising campaign with a goal of $200,000, which he matched the first $100,000. The campaign quickly went viral and Watt was overwhelmed by the donations that kept flooding in.

In addition to the hurricane-relief efforts, his Justin J. Watt Foundation, founded in 2010, has provided more than $3.4 million in funding for youth sports.

“We have long been proud and appreciative of J.J.’s passion and authentic care for others as he has consistently given back to the community, created memories for all ages and positively impacted lives around the world,” Texans founder Bob McNair said last month. “J.J. is one of the most selfless, giving and inspiring young men in the NFL and we are proud he is a Houston Texan.”bills_029

So much for offensive coaches landing all of the NFL’s head coaching jobs.

The league-wide trend toward hiring offensive coordinators as head coaches was interrupted Wednesday when two defensive coordinators landed jobs. The Denver Broncos hired Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph as their coach. The Buffalo Bills struck a deal with Carolina Panthers defensive boss Sean McDermott as their successor to Rex Ryan.

The NFL’s sudden fixation with defensive coaches might not last long. Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay was having a second interview Wednesday with the Los Angeles Rams for their head coaching vacancy.

Nnadi has been a thorn in the side of offensive lines for some time. His hustle and strength make him a likely NFL starter. His height (listed at 6-foot-1) and length measurables are question marks, though. Can he make scouts forget those numbers and leap into the mid-first round, like Sheldon Rankins did in Mobile a couple of years ago? Nnadi is also jostling for position with Stanford’s Harrison Phillips, who’ll be competing at the Senior Bowl, as well as underclassmen. He needs a big week of winning one-on-one battles and holding the line of scrimmage.

James finished with 18 points and remains seven shy of becoming the seventh player in NBA history to reach the 30,000-point plateau. His next chance is Tuesday when the Cavs visit San Antonio.

James entered the fourth quarter within reach of 30,000. But after he missed two shots, James was replaced with 6:37 remaining and the Cavs trailing 128-101. The 33-year-old hoped to make history in front of his home fans and family, but it wasn’t to be.

“Deshaun was getting ready to have what looked like it was going to be ridiculous rookie year,” said Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay, the chairman of the NFL’s rulemaking competition committee. “Wentz was playing as good as any player playing in our game today. And Aaron Rodgers is now coming back. We’ll see. High-profile injuries always are upsetting because they do drive a lot of the popularity and focus of the game. But as far as is it different than years past? I don’t know yet.”

The Packers at least can look forward to Rodgers’s return Sunday. They probably would have been one of the league’s top teams if Rodgers had been available all season. Instead, they are 7-6 and clinging to long-shot hopes to reach the NFC playoffs.cowboys_056

The BBWAA has taken away LeBatard’s vote for life. That can be a swing their way eventually.

Indianapolis was sort of old and dusty and definitely minor-league, with a rickety ballpark and a downtown with nothing happening, at least compared to Cincinnati. Maybe not quite how native Hoosier David Letterman described Indy of the 1960s on Saturday (like a minimum-security prison with a racetrack), but still far behind mid-sized cities like Cincinnati. More Letterman: People would say, ‘Dave, we’re planning a trip to Indianapolis, what should we do?’ This was years and years ago. I said, ‘This is what I’d do if I was going to Indianapolis. I’d rent a car and go to Chicago.’

Jim Harbaugh (Michigan): One mediocre season away from being called a flop in Ann Arbor. Should he get out of town ahead of the posse for safer climes of TV?

Phil Simms (CBS Sports): Good soldier went from the No. 1 CBS announce team to the NFL Today studio without complaint. But there’s nothing like a lead analyst gig. If ESPN came knocking, would Simms say no?

“It was something different, before and after the hurricane,” says Altuve. “The Houston fans have been great all the time. Before the hurricane they were supporting us while we were playing, but after you felt like they were there for each other and for us at the same time. I don’t know how to explain it, but it was a great feeling.”

No sport can close the wound of such devastation. But no sport can provide a better salve than baseball. Its restorative properties are bound in its ubiquity: Baseball is there every day (or darn near close), which gives it a reliability and normalcy that become especially valuable in disruptive times. It also provides a conveyor belt of hope. Don’t like today? Tomorrow, bearing another game, can be better, or maybe the one after that. One day at a time.patriots_105_4c3213c4bb1c3d7a-180x180

A trend is not synonymous with acceptance; many journalists still recoil from the label homer.

Last week writers covering the NHL’s Predators took exception to a tweet from the Vegas Golden Knights’ official team account that claimed reporters applauded after a Nashville goal. The tweet was deleted, and the team issued an apology, but the episode launched a brief public debate about credibility and sensitivity to professionalism that would have been unnecessary a generation ago.

“We’re excited to unveil the ‘City Edition’ uniform for our incredible fans in Philadelphia as we celebrate this city’s rich history and spirit of revolution,” said Chris Heck, Philadelphia 76ers President of Business Operations. “With a design inspired by the Declaration of Independence and other historical notes, our City Edition jersey captures the essence of Philadelphia in a manner that can be boldly showcased by the likes of Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid and the entire 76ers roster.

The uniform will debut on Feb 2 when the 76ers play the Heat and will be worn on all Friday home games following and all April home games.

Golden Knights get 3 quick goals in 2nd to beat Stars 5-3

In their first NHL season, the Vegas Golden Knights are getting big goals from players up and down the roster.

If the New Jersey Devils are to break out of their recent funk, they’ll have to do so against the hottest team in the NHL when they host the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

The Kings (20-8-3) are in the midst of a league-best eight-game winning streak. After missing the playoffs last season, the Kings sit atop the Pacific Division with 43 points, and their plus-29-goal differential is second-best in the NHL.

Tuesday’s contest marks the first of a four-game East Coast road trip for the Kings that is not necessarily an advantage for New Jersey (16-9-4) since Los Angeles is 10-3-1 on the road and the Devils are only 6-5-2 at The Rock.

“It really doesn’t matter what we’ve done to this point,” Kings coach John Stevens told the team’s website following practice on Monday. “This is an important trip to continue to get points and continue to try and play well and build our team game.”

Apple, the 10th overall pick last year, was inactive for the fourth straight game. He responded to a tweet asking why he wasn’t playing with “I’m too healthy” and an emoji of a man with his hands in the air. He also retweeted a tweet that praised Cowboys running back Rod Smith for icing the Giants with an 81-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.

Apple and Smith both went to Ohio State.

“I had a conversation with Eli about that. I was disappointed,” interim coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “I told him I was disappointed. We’ll decide exactly what we do with it. He apologized. We move on from that.”mariners_755

Snead appears to have taken steps forward as far as his health during the past week.

If that were really the case, then Georgia should have the top spot and it shouldn’t be that much of a debate. The Dawgs’ win at Notre Dame continues to look more impressive, while Bama’s win over Florida State in “the greatest opening weekend matchup ever!” isn’t really that anymore, is it? Meanwhile, in the beauty contest between one-loss teams, Oklahoma’s loss to Iowa State doesn’t look so bad anymore, does it? And despite the Big 12’s overall issues, the Sooners’ bulldozing of the Horseshoe remains one of the year’s most impressive victories.

The best one-on-one battle of the day was Julio Jones vs. Morris Claiborne, at least while it lasted. The Jets cornerback did an excellent job keeping the Falcons’ All-Pro playmaker in check before Claiborne was forced out of the game with a foot injury.

He practiced in full each day and is not listed on the pregame injury report. If he is limited again this week, it won’t be because of the health of his hamstring.

Alshon Jeffery, Philadelphia Eagles, groin, 1 p.m. ET: Despite his addition to the injury report this week with a groin injury, Jeffery was a full participant in practice throughout the week and there are no concerns about his availability for Sunday.

The project is expected to include a high-end hotel and first-class restaurants, office space and retail stores, apartments and condos. Khan wants all the buildings to have “a soul, have character to them,” he says. “You see that in Barcelona, or in Paris.” This is all expected to cost north of $500 million in private funding, and Khan is expected to foot a good chunk of that.

“Shad has said, this is the one great chance that Jacksonville has to change its face,” says Paul Harden, Khan’s Jacksonville-based lawyer, another partygoer. “[Shad] doesn’t do anything small, as you can see by his boat.

Something to Wrestle returns to its live circuit this weekend.

Barnes wears cleats and gloves, and he’s somewhat serious about winning. “Not to toot our own horn, but we are the two-time defending champs,” he says. “We have plays that we send out each week, just to go through the route tree and numbers.”

While the Drunken Bears are mostly dressed in their team color, orange, the Stiff Arms don’t seem to have any kind of uniform. “When we show up, we don’t necessarily look like a team,” Curry says. “We don’t even wear our shirts, sometimes we’re not matching. That’s kind of worked in our favor. We’d rather people think we aren’t going to be that good, and then we surprise them.”

To beat Philadelphia’s outstanding front seven, Schneider knows he might have to go get a tackle by Tuesday’s deadline. Joe Staley’s overpriced in San Francisco (and suffered a reported suborbital fracture under his right eye on Sunday), and Cordy Glenn not likely to be freed up in Buffalo. It might be Brown or Colt Anthony Castonzo … and Brown’s better. We shall see.

Don’t sweat the low tackle rate or the modest snap rate Peppers claims this season, as he’s purely a pass-rush specialist at this phase of his career. While his exposure rates suggest he’s a boom-or-bust fantasy option, it’s worth noting Peppers has tallied at least a half sack in all but two games this season and is 18th among defensive ends in fantasy points per game as a result.

“Interestingly, Owen Hart was referring to himself as ‘The Real Hitman’, perhaps trying to transition into that role if Bret was truly leaving the company,” said Thompson.

Although Thompson will not be present in Detroit this Sunday, the show will be hosted by Bruce Prichard and Jim Cornette.

“I go, Holy crap I have to block him, that’s the guy I got to block,” Dowling says. “I take a step and I have him lined up. I take another step, eh, I don’t have him lined up so much. I take another step, I’m chasing him.”
